LANZAROTE 1 CD MARINO 2,

LANZAROTE   1   CD MARINO   2,   3rd December 2017,

The Rojillos suffer a shock defeat to the 12th placed side and slip to five points off a playoff position though they remain in fifth spot with a game in hand on teams above.

A disappointing result for the Brentford boys but the beers ease the pain.

The first opportunity fell to Lanzarote in the 14th minute when Ayoze Pérez beat two defenders and squared the ball to Alex Cruz who must have thought that he had scored from six yards but the keeper produced a stunning save with his feet deflecting his effort over the crossbar.

A great save from the Tenerife keeper denying Alex Cruz from six yards

The Conejeros (locals) dominated the first half and looked good in possession and quickly closing down the Tenerife side when losing the ball. In the 24th minute defender Dani García cut in from the right and hit a powerful strike from the edge of the box but the ball went straight into the arms of the well positioned goalkeeper.

The only look at goal in the first half from the visitors came on the half hour when a free kick from the left by defender Fran found the head of his captain Javi but his effort did not worry the Lanzarote keeper as it cleared the crossbar by some distance.

Striker Javi Trujillo with the assist.

Midfielder Borja was involved in most of his team’s good plays and it was his superbly weighted ball in the 33rd minute that set striker Javi Trujillo on the attack down the right wing. The Lanzarote front man timed his run to perfection then feigned a cross before delivering an inch perfect pass into the centre. Captain Ayoze Pérez charged through the centre and made the ball his in between two defenders to stroke home and give his side a 1-0 advantage to take into the half time break.

Lanzarote began the second half well and within seconds missed out on a couple of opportunities to extend their lead. The Chicharreras (Tenerifians) kept a solid organised defence and began to grow in confidence believing that they could get something out of this game.

Thats what it was

In the 53rd minute CD Marino were awarded a free kick on the edge of the left hand corner of the 18 yard box. Lanzarote born player Kevin Castro surprised the Lanzarote defence and keeper by whipping in a powerful strike into the top right corner to level matters at 1-1.

CD Marino with their third away win of the season.

The Rojillos then had two opportunities in quick succession to regain the lead. Javi Betancort headed just wide from a cross from Gastón Cedrez and Ayoze Pérez saw his free kick saved at full stretch from the Tenerife keeper from 25 yards.

In the 61st minute Lanzarote carelessly gave the ball away and a long distance pass from the right back sent striker Zeben on the chase. He had an awful lot to do but the Tenerife centre forward beat the defender to the ball and delightfully chipped the ball back over him then on the half volley guided his right footed effort into the top right hand corner leaving keeper Sasha no chance and giving his side a 1-2 lead. An absolute cracker of a goal.

Two lads on top of the stand with a birds eye view.

Last year’s captain and striker Rosmen who announced his retirement at the end of last season had a change of heart and was immediately introduced to try and salvage the game.

In the 79th minute Rosmen almost had the dream return but his header flew just wide of the right hand post. Ayoze Pérez then came close late on but in truth his side lacked the intensity that they have shown this season as they suffered their second home defeat of the season.

The return of striker Rosmen.

Lanzarote may feel a little hard done by to lose this game but the goal from Zeben was worthy to win any football match.

Still singing in defeat.

All the top five teams have lost three times this season with Lanzarote with more draws than the others. The Rojillos do trail the last playoff spot by five points and the leaders by a further four points though they have that game in hand.

There is no game next week then on the 17th December Lanzarote travel to Tenerife to play UD Las Zocas  (11th) then three days later they are back in Tenerife to play the rearranged match versus Atlético Guímar then its two home games on the bounce on Saturday 23rd December and then a week later on Saturday 30th December.

Fellow Lanzarote teams didn’t fare much better as Haría CF found themselves 3-0 down to UD Ibarra inside 11 minutes and eventually lost 4-1 and slip to second from bottom,  whilst Yaiza did well coming from two goals down at home to CD Santa Úrsula to eventually draw 2-2 in the 94th minute and are in eighth spot.
