16th February 2014

Yaiza´s debut season in the Tercera Division (Fourth tier) is proving to be a good one. On a horrendous windy day they blew away Lanzarote early in the first half and in doing so completed the double over their more illustrious neighbours with their 3-1 home win earlier on in the season.

The opening stages of the match were evenly balanced with both sides committed to winning the ball. In the 12 minute British boy Kennedy was put through the centre but just as he struck the ball the defender pulled back the winger ever so slightly but it was enough for Kennedy to stretch and sky the ball over the bar.

Two minutes later and good build up play for Yaiza set up midfielder Dani who struck the ball low and hard from just inside the area into the corner of the net giving our southern friends a 0-1 lead.

The visitors had another fantastic opportunity to double their advantage just a couple of minutes later. Striker Antonio Yeray let rip from the edge of the box and it was only a brilliant save from Rojillos keeper Agoney that prevented the visitors taking a two goal lead.

Lanzarote did press but lacked ideas in the final third and as the game headed towards half time the teams looked evenly matched.

As the wind picked up early in the second half with gusts reaching 80kmh Lanzarote knew it was going to be tough to get a grip of the game. Yaiza defended from the front and forced Lanzarote into playing the long ball and with that wind the ball ended up everywhere.

Lanzarote captain Jotha normally inch perfect pass was not working in that wind. On one occasion a ball into the centre from the left ended up going out for a throw in on the same side.

The visitors were not giving Lanzarote a second on the ball and had opportunities themselves on the break to kill off the game. Ex Rojillo Kamara was guilty of a terrible miss from six yards as his effort flew over the bar as did Ubay who sneaked in at the far post but from a few yards out put the ball wide.

Lanzarote did not make Yaiza pay for their sloppy finishing as they failed to find momentum and whimpered out to their third home defeat of the season. Yaiza move up to 9th spot whilst Lanzarote are four points adrift of them in 13th position.

This game was due to be played at Lanzarote´s true home ground in Arrecife, Ciudad Deportiva. The new stand is complete as is the latest technology in astro turf. The company who had the contract made the markings on the pitch too wide so they will have to be redone.

The next home game should be in Arrecife but as always please double check either on here or the Facebook page at Lanzarote football club.

Next week Lanzarote travel to Tenerife to play Las Zocas who are unbeaten in their last four outings and sit one place higher in the table than the Rojillos.
