UD SAN FERNANDO   1   LANZAROTE   2,     25th March 2017,

The Rojillos refuse to give up on their quest for a playoff place as they come from behind against the second placed side and find the winner in stoppage time.

It still may be a long shot but Adolfo Pérez´s men showed character against a side that have just lost at home once this season. If Lanzarote were to keep their hopes alive they had to start clawing back the seven point gap which stands between them and fourth spot.

A stunning free kick in the 91st minute from Ayoze Pérez reduced the deficit to four points but only for an hour as the team sitting in the final playoff spot UD Ibarra won their home match 2-1 to reopen the seven point gap.

The Gran Canarian side dominated the first half and took a deserved lead in the 20th minute when Rojillos defender Fran Gil handled the ball inside the area and the referee had no choice but to award a spot kick. Striker Jefté blasted low into the left hand corner sending keeper Alejandro the wrong way and his side into a 1-0 lead.

The home side have had a metaphoric rise through the divisions over the last five years and even after today’s defeat they remain in second spot and are eight points clear of fifth placed side CD Marino.

The locals would have been kicking themselves for not extending their lead as they squandered various chances but things could have been worse because just before the break the former San Fernando player Jonathan Quintero came close to levelling but his effort flew off the crossbar.

The second half was much more competitive as Lanzarote began to threaten. In the 63rd minute a super cross from the right delivered by Louis Kennedy was met perfectly by the powering head of Jonathan Quintero and rocketed into the left corner with the keeper just a spectator to level at 1-1. An absolute text book finish for Lanzarote´s leading scorer now with 18 goals this season.

San Fernando responded well  and striker Aday turned the Lanzarote defence but Rojillos keeper Alejandro who has started the last three matches proved his worth reading the situation and blocking the striker with a great interception.

Another good performance from keeper Alejandro.

In the 91st minute Lanzarote were awarded a free kick 20 yards out just left of centre. Ayoze Pérez always oozing with confidence stepped up and wrapped his curling right foot around the ball giving it height and dip, he saw his tremendous effort clear the wall and come down just under the crossbar with the keeper only able to palm the ball into the roof of the net to earn his side a brilliant victory.

Lanzarote have moved up to eighth spot but other playoff hopefuls CD Marino, UD Ibarra and most noticeably Lanzarote´s other island team in this division U.S. Yaiza also won. Yaiza have had a terrific season but in their last five matches have only picked up two points. Not only was it a wonderful 5-2 home victory but it was also against fellow playoff hopefuls SD Tenisca.

Yaiza are now in sixth spot and five points off the playoffs but they do have a game in hand so they are in a far better position than there more illustrious neighbours.

This Sunday 2nd April at 12 noon Lanzarote must make no mistake if they are to stay in the hunt for a playoff place. They face mid table Tenerife side CF Unión Viera.
