UD LAS ZOCAS   1   LANZAROTE   0,    9th April 2017,

Lanzarote´s hopes of finishing in the top four and qualifying for the playoffs have all but been extinguished after this defeat against the Tenerife side.

A goal from veteran striker Jonathan Sesma, former team mate of Diego Costa at Valladollid inside the first ten minutes was enough for the home side to guarantee themselves Tercera Division football next season.

The former Tenerife Primera Liga striker was given space inside the area and just had the keeper to beat in which he made no mistake sending his side into a 1-0 lead.

The Rojillos had opportunities to level the score but the run of the green hasn’t happened this season for Adolfo Peréz´s men, Quintero came close in the 19th minute and Rosmen saw his effort come crashing back off the crossbar just before the half time whistle.

Lanzarote came out for the second half knowing that they must score to have any realistic hope of reaching the playoffs. They dominated possession but their ideas were not good enough to break down the stubborn Tenerife defence.

Things were made that much more difficult in the 63rd minute when midfielder Javi Betancort picked up his second yellow card so Lanzarote were forced to play the remainder of the match with ten men.

Four minutes after the sending off Lanzarote believed they had a lifeline when midfielder Cherre clearly handled the ball inside the penalty box but the official to the shock of the Rojillo bench chose to waive away the protests of the Lanzarote players.

Lanzarote still drove forward looking to get something out of the game but this left them short in defence and open to the counter attack. Rojillos keeper Alejandro kept his side in the match with a great save from sub Cristian but at the other end Las Zocas defender Pablo cleared off the line as Rosmen thought that he had levelled with his strike.

The Rojillos fought till the very end but returned to Lanzarote with no points and an almighty task if they are now to reach the playoffs.

UD Ibarra cemented fourth spot against 5th placed side CD Marino with a 3-0 win and U.S. Yaiza came from behind to win 2-1 to move up to fifth spot. They trail Ibarra by four points but do have a game in hand and do look the main contenders with Ibarra to clinch the final playoff spot.

Lanzarote will still have a huge say in this as they have to play both sides.

This Thursday 13th April at 12.30pm Lanzarote host CD Santa Úrsula. The Tenerife side are fighting for their lives and are currently second from bottom and four points from safety. The Rojillos simply have to win to keep the dream alive.
