LANZAROTE   2   UD TELDE   1,     29th January 2017,

The Rojillos made hard work of their victory against bottom club UD Telde in a match that they dominated from start to finish; nevertheless the three points move Lanzarote from ninth to sixth spot and they have also clawed back two points so now trail a playoff finish by five.

Building walls has become the new fashion lately and the Gran Canarian side followed the advice of a certain man in the United States by just doing that, ultimately with enough pressure walls crack and five minutes from time the wall got bulldozed down.

Manager Adolfo Pérez game plan was obvious as he began the match with three strikers and from the first whistle his side took complete control of the match. Ayoze Pérez in midfield was in sparkling form and whilst the Rojillos pinged the ball around with ease it was in the final third that things did not go to plan.

The first good opportunity fell to the Lanzarote captain Rosmen. Ayoze swept in a cross from the left, Rosmen controlled the ball and beat a defender before unleashing a powerful strike that flew over the bar by a couple of metres.

In the 35th minute Rojillos striker Natanael had a goal bound shot blocked and just a minute later Louis Kennedy had a good effort from 10 yards which was creeping inside the right hand post until the Telde keeper produced a brilliant one handed save to tip the ball away for a corner.

It was a good team performance for the first half but the visitors were stubborn in defence and also with the help of some poor finishing the game remained goalless at the break.

Five minutes into the second half and in form striker Quintero had a great opportunity to give his side the lead. A ball nodded perfectly down from Rosmen into the path of the league’s second top scorer but unfortunately he blasted his strike narrowly over the crossbar.

Three minutes later and a mix up in the centre of the Lanzarote defence allowed Telde striker Arrazola a clear run at goal. The Lanzarote keeper Alejandro replacing the suspended Agoney stood tall till the very last then went down saving with his feet.

The Rojillos are blessed to have such good keepers with Agoney last season’s player of the year and also Alejandro who has played much of his career with the high flying Las Palmas side.

This proved to be just what Lanzarote needed as they increased the pressure hitting the woodwork.  Louis Kennedy had another effort blocked but finally in the 63rd minute, a corner was swung in from the right which drew the keeper out, Natanael won the ball and eventually forced it home to give his side a 1-0 lead.

Lanzarote had plenty of chances to put this game to bed most notably in the 71st minute when Rosmen fired a penalty kick so hard and so high that it settled in Fuerteventura.

Two minutes later and the visitors were gifted the softest of penalties. The ref who had had a very good game did make a mess of this one. Lanzarote defender Raúl made an honest challenge winning the ball with a header only to shockingly see the official point to the spot.

Striker Augustin sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 1-1 which gave belief to his side that they could go home with an unlikely point. To his credit the ref he did openly admit at the end of the match to his mistake.

In the 82nd minute Raúl came close with a header and just a few minutes later a throw launched in from Raúl was flicked on by Rosmen hitting legs then onto the post but midfielder Javi Betancort got the all important touch to restore Lanzarote´s lead to 2-1.

With two minutes remaining Rosmen from the edge of the box struck the ball so hard but it rattled off the crossbar and back past him.

The Rojillos did have to endure a nervy end to the match with a flurry of crosses from the Gran Canarian side but were worthy of all three points.

Next week the Rojillos travel to the south of Tenerife to face CD Buzanada . This was the team that ended their 43 home game unbeaten run with a shock 1-5 win.

The points are getting clawed back and the mood in the Lanzarote camp is the best that it has been this season. If you are in two minds about attending a game then please do as we could be in for a grandstand finish.
