LANZAROTE 3 CD TENERIFE 2

LANZAROTE   3   CD TENERIFE   2,       4th October 2015

It has always been great game between these two sides and this was no exception. Both teams must be applauded for how they fought in such heat. At kick off it was 36 degrees and how the pace of the game continued throughout the match was incredible. Even the bar run out of water but fortunately the beer was still flowing.

Lanzarote began the game in great style. Just three minutes in and captain Rosmen sent winger Toñito through with a well measured pass and Lanzarote´s number 11 made no  mistake surprising the Tenerife goalkeeper by beating him at the near post to send his side 1-0 up.

In the 8th minute a deep cross from Marcos Cabrera found Toñito and from a narrow angle the winger with all the confidence in the world blasted a volley from a narrow angle which flew off the post for a goal kick.

Tenerife´s B side were playing some nice football but really did lack the killer blow. In 10th minute striker Bolaños was put through and from the edge of the area his strike was little more than a pass back to the Lanzarote keeper Agoney.

In the 21st minute Marcos Cabrera cleverly chipped the Tenerife keeper but the midfielder was unlucky to see his effort land on top of the net rather than in it.

Three minutes later a goal worthy of being on the world stage was witnessed by all in the Arrecife stadium. A cross was cleared and fell to Rojillos midfielder Oscar Vladimir. The central midfielder timed his volley to perfection and from 25 yards the ball flew like a bullet hitting the underside of the bar and then into the roof of the net. It was one of those rare moments.

Lanzarote were the more threatening but the visitors held out till half time as the Rojillos went into the break 2-0 to the good.

Fifteen minutes into the second half and Tenerife were well and truly back in the game when striker Brian Martín curled a ball around the Lanzarote wall from a free kick and found the right hand corner to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

Five minutes later and Louis Kennedy won the ball in midfield and fed Vladi who in turn sent Toñito on his way, his low cross was destined to find a Rojillo boot until a defender did well to clear over the bar for a corner.

The Rojillos were now desperately looking for that third goal. Right back Ángel Gil was found by Toñito on the overlap on several occasions with Rosmen coming close to benefiting on these attacks. Finally in the 72nd minute a lovely chip from man of the match Toñito hit the bar, he reacted quickest to the rebound and restored Lanzarote´s two goal cushion with the score 3-1.

Just as the Rojillos thought they were going to coast to victory another outstanding free kick from 20 yards for the visitors brought the score closer at 3-2 in the 82nd minute.

Fortunately Lanzarote held firm and secured their second win on the bounce and move within three points of league leaders Las Palmas B though they remain in fourth spot.

Another wonderful entertaining match that now makes it 24 games since the Rojillos tasted defeat on home turf.  After seven matches played this season only Lanzarote and Villa Santa Brígida remain unbeaten. Next week Lanzarote travel to Tenerife to face lowly CD Marino.

Unfortunately it looks as though midfielder Brad Cockerill will be out for at least a couple more weeks with a knee ligament problem.  Another huge concern for Lanzarote is that they only have one goalkeeper as reserve keeper Rayco tore his knee ligaments last week in training and is out for the season.  On the bench this week was 15 year old Adrían Barrera though it is expected a new keeper will sign this week.

On an extremely sad note during this match Lanzarote became aware of the death of their doctor for seasons 2001/02 to 2008/09 Antonio Zoido. Zoido as he was known to all enjoyed the years when Lanzarote were competing in Segunda B (League 1) and was the clubs doctor for the Real Madrid Copa Del Rey match as well as games in the Spanish cup versus many Primera Liga sides.

Just 55 years of age he never recovered from a heart attack but will be remembered for his love of sailing and football and spent many years as the doctor of Club La Santa sports complex on the island. During my early years with the club he assisted me with the clubs directors which will not be forgotten. Adios Zoido, may you rest in peace.
