A BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE SEASON SO FAR
18th September 2007

                              LANZAROTE  0  FUERTEVENTURA 1
The first game of the season on the 26th August was a home game versus newly promoted Fuerteventura. The Majoreros (Fuerteventurians) top scorer last season Memo gave the visitors the victory as early as the 8th minute. It was a disappointing result though the players felt positive with their performance.
                                    SWEDISH STAR POLEAXED
The following day after training matters got a lot worse for the Rojillos (reds). A minor disagreement between keeper Diego Arroyo and Swedish star Fredrik turned disastrous. For some unknown reason Arroyo ran at Fredrik and headbutted him on his blind side shattering his cheekbone in 5 places. The result of this was an instant dismissal for Arroyo and an operation in Las Palmas for Fredrik with 6-8 weeks on the sidelines.

What a start to the season. Home derby defeat on opening day followed by the sacking of your keeper and your best player in hospital. This was a great opportunity to test the characters of the players, would they weaken or could this give them strength? They chose the latter.

                                      ALCORCON 1  LANZAROTE 2
Before the match away to a team that the Rojillos had never beaten on their turf the players phoned Fredrik and pledged to bring home all 3 points. With only 4 minutes remaining and the scores tied at 1 a piece new signing Nene stole through and honored the promise with the first away win of the season.

                             LANZAROTE 2  MARINO LUANCO 1
A good first half display was enough to secure maximum points with man of the match Yeray supplying one and hitting in a belter from 25 yards. With the first home victory in the bag moves the Conejeros (locals) into 6th position.

                                      LEGANES  1  LANZAROTE  2
In a goalless first half, sparks began to fly early in the second period as new centre forwards Nacho and Anibal opened their account and gave the Rojillos a 0-2 advantage. The tide turned after the sending off of both the inspirational Juanma and quality midfielder Brenes. The reds now reduced to 9 conceded in the 80th minute and had 10 mins plus to survive the onslaught. The longest serving player with the club, goalkeeper Marino stood firm and with his 11 years experience as Lanzarotes number one  proved to be the hero with a string of outstanding saves.

                                                EARLY DAYS
As proven with the U.D. Lanzarote squad in every negative there is always a positive.  This early season fiasco has thrown up a feeling of togetherness with a team spirit itching to get back out there .From opening defeat to 3rd in the table. Is it to early to be dreaming of Segunda A (championship) football? Probably yes but what the hell. One thing is certain is that Union Deportiva Lanzarote are only 4 games into the season and are already 8 points better off than this time last year.

7th October 2007

A goal in the first minute and last minute of the first half was enough to clinch all 3 points and send the Conejeros (locals) into 4th position which is the precious last play off spot.

Another cracker from the edge of the box rattling the bar by Nene in the first minute and a glancing header from Nacho proved decisive.

A decent crowd which seems to be growing by the week encouraged Union Deportiva Lanzarote to 14 points from 7 played which is exactly 13 points better off than this time last season. With Swedish star Fredrik set to return probably for the next home game and with new keeper Alberto making an impressive debut against Celta Vigo B all seems quite rosy with manager Paco Gutierrez.

The Rojillos kept up their unbeaten run to 5 games with a hard fought draw in Madrid.

Lanzarote were reduced to 10 men before taking the lead against San Sebastian De Los Reyes. In the 41st minute Nene who is proving to be quite a find probably scored the “ goal of the season”. Seeing the keeper off his line he had a crack from inside his own half and the ball hit the net as clean as a whistle. A goal Mr Beckham would have been proud of.

The Rojillos were put under immense pressure and finally cracked with only 5 minutes remaining leveling the match. Overall it was another good result but U.D. Lanzarote slip down to 6th spot in the table.

Unión Deportiva Lanzarote have chalked up another away win which sends the Rojillos into 2nd position in the table.

Only a short time ago Lanzarote ended their dreadful away form which didn’t see a victory for 18 months. 5 away games this season and Lanzarote have won 4 and drawn the other.

The Rojillos took the lead through Nacho midway through the first half only for the side from Tenerife to draw level 10 minutes later. On the hour mark a cross from the skilful Yeray was dummied from Perreira and left for Nacho to blast home his second goal of the game and ensure victory.

More good news for Lanzarote as Fredrik played the final 15 minutes following surgery on his cheekbone and should be ready for next weeks home game.

4th November 2007

Lanzarotes 9 match unbeaten run ended against a very well organized Playa Jandia side. The Rojillos (reds) were the better side in the first half though the side from Fuerteventura took the lead in the 15 minute with a header from from striker Saul. Lanzarote leveled the scores from a cross by in form forward Nene which was nodded in by Anibal.

Midway through the second half the Majoreros (fuerteventurians) regained the lead when Saul cracked in a fierce shot from the edge of the area beating keeper Marino and deservedly held the advantage. The Conejeros (locals) sprang into action and saw an effort from Yeray bounce back from the woodwork and only a fine save from the visitors keeper from a Nene effort kept the Rojillos at bay.

After everything taken into consideration any fan of U.D. Lanzarote would of gratefully accepted 3rd position in the table after 11 games. Next week Lanzarote head off to the peninsular to play Fuenlabrada and then a tough fixture at home against table toppers Deportiva La Coruña B followed away to Real Madrids B side then a home match against Ex- Primera Liga side Rayo Vallecano will test Lanzarotes play off ambitions to the maximum.

18th November 2007

Unión Deportiva Lanzarote remain in third position after earning a hard fought point against league leaders Deportiva La Coruña B in Arrecife.

As expected the game proved to be played with possibly a little too much respect shown between both teams. Deportivas B team have only conceded four goals this season whereas Lanzarote are the leagues top scorers with 20.

Through suspension the Rojillos badly missed the innovation that Yeray supplies and Anibals awareness of how to hold up play and feed his team mates. During the first period there was a lot of hard work and good football on display but with no clear cut chances.

The game began to open up in the beginning of the second half with Lanzarote trying to catch The Galicians on the break. Fortune did seem to favor The Conejeros (locals) when a free kick on the edge of the area was superbly saved by the Rojillos keeper Alberto but the follow up was nodded in by sub Aridane who had initially been in an offside position and therefore the goal was overruled.

Manager Paco Guitérrez introduced striker Abando  in the 67th minute and 10 minutes later local boy Toñito was given his chance on the right wing. Both combined well but the elusive opportunity just didn’t come. As Lanzarote looked to improve on their home form Deportiva nearly stole the show with a couple of late strikes.

With a good crowd of around 1300 a draw seemed to be a fair result with the Rojillos edging possession but their opponents creating better chances. Next up for the Rojillos is an away trip to Madrid to face Real Madrids second team. The next home game will be on Sunday the 2nd of December against Ex Primera Liga side Rayo Vallecano

24th September 2007

U.D.Lanzarote lost out on 2 valuable points in the last 5 minutes against 10 man Atletico Madrids B side.

After an uneventful half hour or so the Rojillos took the lead through a pass from Yeray, the Madrid keeper always looked first to get to the ball however for the second week running striker Anibal latched onto it and what looked suspiciously like handball sneaked it past Keeper Bernabe for an easy tap in.

Just before the break a free kick from defender Javi Jimenez was superbly executed from 25 yards hitting the underside of the crossbar and then bouncing over the line then into the roof of the net. An absolute cracker. The Conejeros came out for the second half buoyant with their 2 goal lead and looked intent on increasing their lead but then in the 66th minute a wonderful passing move from the away side was headed in from striker Batres reducing the lead to a single goal.

Amidst the celebrations of the team from Madrid Anibal was put instantly through with a one on one with the keeper, a desperate late tackle from Debris whipping away Anibals legs and the referee had no alternative but to award a penalty and send the defender for an early bath. Yeray stepped up and punished his opponents for their sleepwalking after scoring and restored the 2 goal cushion.

The Conejeros had a fantastic opportunity to bury their opponents when local boy Eliot rose highest from a corner and nodded the ball towards the right hand corner and as the ball was heading in Anibal touched it from an offside position and the goal was disallowed. At 4-1 the team from Madrid would never of come back. However justice seemed to have been done following Anibals earlier handball.

Atletico Madrids second team rallied and gave themselves a lifeline in the 85th minute when Rubiato once again narrowed the scores. With Lanzarotes defence in tatters Alex Quillo broke through albeit with the use of his hand and grabbed a 92nd minute equalizer and sent Lanzarote from 3rd position in the table down to fifth.

Minutes after the final whistle I complained to Club Director Antonio Torres about our poor defending and throwing away 2 points and he simply stated to me “this is exactly why we love the game so much, sometimes its for you and sometimes not”. He couldn’t be more correct. This time last season U.D.Lanzarote were lying at the foot of the table with a solitary point knowing it was going to be a tough fight, whereas this season the Rojillos are only goal difference away from a play off spot for Segunda A (championship) football.

Next Sunday Lanzarote are away to bottom club S.S.Reyes and are in search of their 3rd successive away win.

The Rojillos away form is nothing short of superb. Its now 6 away games with 5 wins and a draw.

Unión Deportiva Lanzarote took the lead midway through the first half from the inspirational centre back Juanma. The team from Madrid applied pressure for the remainder of the half but with Lanzarotes longest serving player of 11 years, goalkeeper Marino, being in fine form there was no way through.

Yeray was dismissed in the second half for 2 bookable offences but Lanzarotes defence was well organized and caught Fuenlabrada on the break and Koke nicked in late on to seal the win.

With Fuerteventura and Pájara Playa only taking a point a piece in a 1-1 draw as well as table toppers Deportiva La Coruña dropping 2 points at home with the same scoreline it leaves Lanzarote  in 3rd position but  only 3 points from top spot. The next home game is therefore going to be a cracker with leaders Deportiva La Coruña B team visiting Arrecife on Sunday 18th of November.
Leading from the front. Lanzarotes inspirational centre back Juanma (armband) scorer of Lanzarotes opener in Madrid.
Lanzarote were awarded a penalty in the 17th minute which was converted by Yeray. Manager Paco Gutíerrez had told his players that they had to attack to alter the oppositions tactics as Madrids previous 2 games they had scored four in both.

The Rojillos laid siege in the oppositions box and had corner after corner but failed to convert their possession and seven minutes from time Real Madrid sealed the victory with a great solo effort from Callejón.

The Rojillos have slipped a place down to fourth in the table and host Ex Primera Liga side Rayo Vallecano next Sunday.

25th November 2007

Lanzarote´s superb away run with 5 wins and a draw without a single defeat came to an end against Real Madrids B side.

Both teams set out for victory and the Rojillos (reds) had a good couple of chances in the opening minutes but in the 9th minute it was Real who took the lead through striker Bueno.

Lanzarote began to look more dangerous though Rayos defence passed the ball around with confidence. As the game entered the latter stages it was the visitors who believed they could take home all 3 points and from a corner Pachon rose and headed with intent but was again denied by the outstanding Alberto.

Rayo Vallecano probably has the best squad in this division and at worst should be playing their football in Spain’s second tier of professional football. A team with this class will be in the play offs come the end of the season but Lanzarote can definitely take heart with their point but what remains a fact is the last home win was back in early October and this must soon be rectified if the Rojillos ambition of playing Segunda A (championship) football is to become reality.

Next up for the Rojillos is an away trip to Gran Canaria to face last seasons Segunda A side Vecindario.
Thumbs up from the Swede. Fredrik back in action
Nene can see clearly as he opens the scoring
Unión Deportiva Lanzarote were held to yet another home draw by Ex Primera Liga side Rayo Vallecano.

After an exciting start with good opportunities for both sides it was the Rojillos (reds) who took the lead from top marksman Nene. After breaking through his opponents defence and challenging the keeper it was Nene who ended up with the simple task of rolling the ball into the net.

Some top quality football was being displayed by the team from Madrid and considering their team consists of many players who have played at the top level in Spanish football the Rojillos were always going to be kept on their toes. A fine save from keeper Alberto kept his team with a slender advantage but in the 26th minute after some neat passing, the highly talented Collantes rifled in a shot from 25 yards leaving the Rojillos keeper grabbing at air as the ball sailed into the top right hand corner.

With the scores level and only 5 minutes into the second half the Rojillos manager Paco Gutíerrez brought on the Swede, Fredrik Soderstrom. After suffering a shattered cheekbone early September and more recently shaking off a nagging knee injury it looks as though the former Swedish international is back. After receiving a generous round of applause from the Lanzarote faithful the Ex Porto player set about his task controlling the midfield and looked sharp and hungry for action.

2nd December 2007
The game began great for the Rojillos as Lanzarote´s forward line were testing Vecindarios keeper on many occasions. On the half hour Yeray slipped in on the blind side of the defense and rounded the keeper and from a tight angle finished the job. At this point Lanzarote looked very comfortable with this slender advantage. The game turned 5 minutes later after a dreadful mix up from a long ball between captain Juanma and keeper Alberto and the Lanzarote skipper claimed his first own goal this season. From here on in there were to be no positives to take on the flight home.

One minute into added time in the first half and a double disaster struck. Another defensive misunderstanding led to striker Camacho to nip in and be brought down by the Rojillos keeper. After converting the spot kick and sending Vecindario 2-1 to the good Lanzarote´s target man Anibal had a bust up with the oppositions coach and was given a straight red card.

In the second half the Rojillos were still in the contest that is till Yeray fouled defender Ruben Lopez and was also given a straight red. 5 minutes later Nene fearing there would not be any hot water left in the showers was awarded his second yellow of the game after a challenge on the keeper.

With just over 20 minutes remaining and Lanzarote left with 8 players standing, the match was over. Vecindario put the game to bed in the 71st minute and completed the rout in injury time.

16th December 2007

If there is an advantage playing on an artificial surface for the home club, Unión Deportiva Lanzarote have yet to find it.

No luck today for strikers Nacho Rodriguez (shaved head) and Victor Ramos
The Rojillos (reds) have only picked up 3 points at home in the last possible 15. The last home victory was way back in early October against Celta Vigo B and this has seen the Conejeros (locals) drop from 2nd place down to 8th.

Lanzarote were without 4 of their top class players, Gomez with injury, Yeray, Anibal and leading scorer Nene all suspended. Manager Paco Gutíerrez quite rightly played a 3-5-2 formation against a side that have only scored nine goals all season.

Victor Ramos, Julio Abando and local boy Toñito were all given their chance and failed miserably. In the opening 35 minutes Lanzarote were struggling to come to terms with this new system and with a congested midfield Captain Juanma often chose the long ball to winger Toñito. The 22 year old, born in Arrecife has only played a total of 39 minutes football this season in four substitute appearances and was out muscled from start to finish. The referee also seemed to get fed up with the amount of time he spent on the floor and booked him for dissent midway through the first half.

The only goal came from a routine free kick in the 37th minute. The ball was floated in from the right and Ourenses midfielder Pablo easily lost his marker, Victor Ramos, and planted the ball in the bottom right hand corner leaving keeper Marino no chance.

Forwards Nacho Rodriguez and Abando were introduced in the second half and the football improved. The opposition’s goalkeeper Taranilla  was in outstanding form after a string of fine saves. A free kick from Koke destined for the top corner was tipped over and a one on one with Toñito was saved by his feet. An injury time save from Nacho kept the Rojillos at bay and Ourense held on for their 3rd victory this season and moves them out of automatic relegation.

Real Madrids B team are in great form and after a slow start they have chalked up six consecutive victories and have leapfrogged Lanzarote into 6th position. The final game before the Christmas break is away at Lugo who were beaten by Universidad 3-0 over the weekend. Lanzarote are still only 3 points off the play offs and the next home game is a tough one on Reyes (Kings Day) 6th January against 2nd placed Universidad who are unbeaten in their last seven outings.

The newly promoted team from Gran Canaria took a surprise 14th minute lead through Ruiman from a well taken free kick from 25 yards leaving keeper Alberto with little chance. From there on football was being played from one defence to another and with the referee handing cards out like a timeshare tout it was all stop and start. To make things worse just before the interval Nene was shown a red card for abusive language towards the ref. Thankfully the ref cant hand out cards to spectators as there would have been 1200 or so going for an early bath.
Local lad Oscar was waiting to come on as a sub early in the second half. The assistant ref checked his boots and he ran on the pitch a second before authorization from the ref and pathetically received a yellow card which was to prove fateful. Lanzarote were getting closer and closer and striker Anibal was playing a blinder holding the ball up for his teammates and chasing everything. Prior to the match Manager Paco Gutierrez had warned his players about not conceding first as he knew the opposition have a top class defence and breaking them down was going to be difficult.
19 year old sub Oscar was proving to be a right handful for the oppositions left back with teasing runs down the right flank and chipping in inviting crosses but all to no avail and it was on one of those runs when he beat his marker and just inside the corner of the box faced a shoulder challenge from his marker and went down. The ref read this as a dive and produced his second yellow card to the tiny frame of Oscar and Lanzarote were down to 9.
The attitude of those 9 players led to constant clapping from the supporters and the Rojillos never say die spirit continued when new signing Victor Ramos latched onto a Yeray cross and nodded in for an unbelievable equalizer in injury time.

21st October 2007

2 points lost it could look but with only 9 men wearing red and blue and the clock past the mandatory 90 minutes a point felt like a victory.
U.D.Lanzarote supporters were going wild and the chants of SAROTE (short for Lanzarote) were echoing around the ground. Still the Rojillos pressed forward looking for a sensational winner then finally the ref blew his whistle correctly and that was to end the game.
Lanzarote still occupy 3rd position and remain unbeaten in the last 8. The next home game is on the 4th of November at 11.30am versus Playas de Jandia
She wanted to rock and rock she did.

Unión Deportiva Lanzarote´s poor run of form has continued in Madrid against Lugo. It is now 6 games without a win. Never has a Christmas break been more welcome.

Many fans of Lanzarote have been complaining of how bad the football has been lately, a few supporters have even suggested that U.D. Lanzarotes league is equivalent to a Sunday Pub league side. If that were the case it makes it even more amazing how the Conejeros (locals) were able to compete and beat the likes of Athletic Bilbao, Mallorca, Tenerife and even take the mighty Real Madrid the full distance.

This league is difficult and to finish above relegation is the minimum requirement for Rojillos manager Paco Gutíerrez, anything above is a bonus. The 140,000 population of Lanzarote is competing against the B teams of Atletíco Madrid, Celta Vigo, Real Madrid who have won their last seven games and leaders Deportiva La Coruña with the meanest defence in the league conceding only 7 goals in the 18 matches played.

In the latest match for the Rojillos, going 2-0 down in the first half and playing with the confidence of a man on death row there was never going to be a way back for the islanders.

With the Spanish Christmas break it means come New Year, Lanzarote will be in 9th position and definitely in contention for a Copa Del Rey finish. Normally to qualify for the cup your team has to finish in the top 7 but this changes as the B sides from the various clubs are not allowed in the draw. Above all is for the players and fans of U.D Lanzarote is to fight for every available point and those dreams of only a few years ago in the Cup can become reality once more.

Many thanks for all the people who have emailed throughout the year and to all that I have met at my stand at Teguise market on a Sunday, whether you have supported the mighty Gretna or a troubled Forest fan may the sun shine upon your face in the beautiful island of Lanzarote. If you would like the best souvenir that the island has click onto the shop and an official Lanzarote shirt will in your hands within a week.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Ian, Anna Jessica and Oscar.
The football may not of been great but that bloke in the middle is incredibly sexy.

23rd December 2007

THANK GOD ITS CHRISTMAS
Newly elected President of U.D. Lanzarote Victoriano Elvira requested a 1 minute silence for the death of father of four and Motherwell Captain Phil O’Donnell as a mark of respect for the player and also the many Lanzarote British residents who mourned his death.

January the 6th in Spain is a very important day. Instead of Father Christmas who traditionally delivers presents on the 25th of December the Spanish have to wait for the 3 Kings who arrived today and presented Rojillos manager Paco Gutíerrez with 3 priceless points.

In a very tentative first half the game looked as though the teams would be heading in for the half time Cuppa scoreless, then in injury time a long pass from Fredrik was latched onto by Anibal who was brought down somewhat theatrically and the Conejeros (locals) were awarded a penalty kick. Up stepped Nacho and buried the ball in the bottom left hand corner sending the Rojillos into the break one goal to the good.

The second half got better and with striker Anibal relieving the pressure off his defenders by brilliantly holding the ball up and delivering simple passes followed by his constant harrowing of his opponents defence without the ball a result looked imminent.

Stout defending from centre backs Dani Mayo and Captain Juanma never offered their 2nd placed opponents a route back. A wonderful effort from Nacho destined for the top right hand corner from 30 yards was superbly saved by Universidads keeper Santi Lampón.

In the 59th minute Anibal secured the match with his 4th goal of the season and sent the team back to Gran Canaria pointless and they also slip a place to third. In contrast Lanzarote move up to 8th and are only 3 points away from the play offs.

The next match for Lanzarote is an away trip to Fuerteventura and the Rojillos will be trying to avenge their opening day 1-0 home defeat to our to our friends 10 km across the sea.

Scorer and man of the match Anibal looks on, whilst in the background tourists bask in the hot sun at the Arrecife stadium.

Around 300 Rojillo fans made the 30 minute ferry trip to Fuerteventura all hoping to seek revenge for the 0-1 home defeat on the opening day of the season.

During the first 45 minutes there was much open play and opportunities for both teams with the Majoreros (fuerteventurians) shading possession.

The beginning of the second half was much the same with the home team edging the play. The Lanzarote manager Paco Gutiérrez was furious with some of the decisions of the referee and after a penalty claim and a goal disallowed for offside he blew his top and insulted the official and sat the remaining 20 minutes in the stand.

In the 78th minute Ex Lanzarote boy Gustavo crossed the ball into the area and substitute Memo controlled the ball with his left and planted it away with his right. Things got worse for the Rojillos when centre back Dani Mayo was given a straight red card which seemed to shock and delight the majority of the 2000 crowd.

Despite being a man down the Rojillos rallied and produced a leveler in the 85th minute. Anibal latched onto a mistake in the Fuerteventura defence and this complacency proved expensive for the home team as the traveling fans believed they had nicked a point.

Inexperience cost the Rojillos as they went in search of a winner. With 2 minutes into injury time another Ex Rojillo Futre centered a cross from the right and the man who scored the winner on the opening day, Memo, bundled the ball home and sent his fans delirious.

This result sends Fuerteventura back into the play offs and Lanzarote drop 2 places to 10th.

U.D. Fuerteventura have the inter island bragging rights alter beating Lanzarote deep into stoppage time and in doing so, complete the double on the Rojillos this season.

Los Rojillos claimed all 3 points with the Swede, Fredrik, scoring the winner in the 26th minute following a minute silence for the death of his Grandfather.

In the opening 20 minutes Lanzarote´s defence looked a little shaky without the commanding influence of the suspended centre back Dani Mayo.

The Conejeros (locals) steadily took control and with Ex-Porto player Fredrik finally back to full fitness from an early season fractured cheekbone and groin and knee ligament injury was determined to force the game for the Rojillos. Back to his best with quick, neat passing and intelligent movement was rounded off with a superb strike in the first half.

A pass from central midfielder Pereira was controlled by the Swedes left foot, he then sold the defender by pretending to cross but brought the ball back onto his right and curled his shot into the only space available beating the outstretched keeper to the top right hand corner.

The Rojillos came out from the break one goal to the good and were looking good value though still could not find a second goal cushion. In the 52nd minute manager Paco Gutiérrez looked for the killer touch and sent on Yeray. In his first game back from his four match suspension Yeray teased the Alcorcon defence with his vast array of talents.

Midway through the second half Yeray set off on one of his runs beating two defenders and tucking the ball back from the byline for Nacho to blast home. Unfortunately Nacho hadn’t read the script and attempted a fancy back heel which, to put into simple terms, went pear shaped.

The team from Madrid felt there was a good chance for a point and began to attack with intent. In a matter of 10 seconds they had struck the underside of the bar and had two other chances scrambled off the line. A couple of minutes later only a fine save from keeper Alberto kept the visitors at bay.

The Rojillos held on and with this result move up to 8thh position and are still among the pack only four points away from the play offs. Next Sunday Lanzarote are away in the mainland against relegation strugglers Marino De Luanco.

The Rojillos headed to the Asturias in the top north of Spain in confident mood but in the first 45 minutes were totally outplayed by a side in the relegation zone. Marino went into the break with a goal from striker Nacho Garcia and looked the more likely to score the next.

Rojillos manager Paco Gutiérrez brought on Brenes for the second period and switched tactics which began to pin back the local team. After several missed chances Marino killed the game midway through the second half with another strike from Nacho Garcia.

Instead of being only 2 points off the play offs Lanzarote slip a place to 9th and are only eight points from a relegation play off. The league table is tightening up and the Rojillos will certainly be looking for 3 points next week at home against Leganes

Substitute Brenes brought on for the second half supplied various opportunities for his strikers though they were unable to convert.

27th January 2008

U.D. Lanzarote missed a golden opportunity to close the gap to the play off positions to only 2 points with defeat against lowly Marino de Luanco.

On a beautiful sunny day with temperatures in their mid twenties Unión Deportiva Lanzarote put in a solid performance and took control of the game from the off. The Conejeros began to play some lovely football and hit the bar twice with Yeray and Nene and the Madrid defence scrambled the ball away from the goal line on numerous occasions.

Still Lanzarote were unable to convert and with the scoreline remaining goalless after the best 45 minutes Lanzarote had played for some time the Conejeros were feeling confused on what was needed to be done.

This proved to be the case as Léganes clawed their way back into the game, though only through possession as their chances had been limited with a stout Lanzarote defence led by veteran centre back Dani Mayo.

The breakthrough came in the 64th minute with man of the match Anibal finally getting just reward for all his hard work. At the only point in the match against the run of play Anibal received the ball from his strike partner Nacho turned his defender and planted a curling shot in the bottom right hand corner and this deflated the Madrid side.

Only ten minutes further on and the away side was reduced to 10 men with
midfielder Landaburu receiving his second yellow. The Rojillos couldn’t bury the game with a second goal but come 90 plus minutes were good value for all 3 points.
Next week Lanzarote travel to the capital to take on Atlético Madrids B side and any form of result here would stamp Lanzarote´s intentions of Segunda A (Championship) football next season.

3rd February 2008

Lanzarote won their 3rd consecutive home match against the Madrid side and this has lifted the Rojillos up two places to 8th and remarkably only 2 points from those four precious play off places.

The fusión (merger) will enable some of U.D. Lanzarotes fringe players to compete at a better level rather than Lanzarote´s B side who compete only against local sides. This has been illustrated in the January window when young Lanzarote centre back Eliot transferred to Marítima and in his few games has put in some outstanding performances.

In theory, this should also assist U.D. Lanzarote by making the entire team of Marítima available for selection during transfer window time.

On the negative side, should Marítima win promotion to the league above and Lanzarote do not win promotion to Segunda A (championship) then Marítima would have to remain in the 3rd division. The worst possible outcome could be Lanzarote being relegated and then a domino effect would occur and Marítima would be playing their football down a division and in a local league.

Both supporters know that this makes sense for strength as well as financial. Both sets of supporters voted unanimously for the joining of the Islands two clubs and are leaving open an option for other clubs in the island to join the venture.

Overall not a lot of change is expected and the hope of Lanzarote to compete in Segunda A football should gather momentum. As a famous Spanish saying goes “Vamos a ver”. (lets wait and see) I will keep you updated.

9th February 2008

Two weeks ago the presidents and directors of both clubs signed an agreement to put forward to their supporters a merger between Lanzarote´s most successful clubs.

The merger is to create one club for the island and remain competing at National level. Orientación Marítima are the Islands oldest Club founded in 1954 and are in Spain’s fourth tier of National level though compete only against inter island clubs. Unión Deportiva Lanzarote was only founded in 1970 and has spent the last 7 years competing professionally in Spain’s Segunda Division B (league 1).

Lanzarote may have slipped down 2 places but picking up an away point against Atlético Madrids B side is priceless.

This game was not an advert for beautiful football that the Americans in Hollywood dream of, in fact, it was more like having a pint down the Nags Head with Del Boy.

Take nothing away from both sets of players as both dug in deep. The referee hardly let the game flow with constant whistling for minor offences and in total 12 yellow cards were dished out, seven for the visitors.

In the 33rd minute The Lanzarote keeper made a fine save from winger Alex Quillo but from the break Nene beat the offside trap and only a superb save from keeper Ruyales prevented the Rojillos going one up.

The second half continued in the same fashion. Very few opportunities with most of the game being played in midfield. It may of not been a classic but being undefeated away is vital and manager Paco Gutiérrez will be looking for the full 3 points in next weeks home game against second from bottom S.S. Reyes.

18th February 2008

Union Deportiva Lanzarote´s search for a fourth consecutive home win did not materialize and the Conejeros (locals) left the field grateful for a point.

The opening 10 minutes the team from Madrid took the game to the Conejeros and did not look like a team with deep relegation worries. Marino, the Lanzarote goalkeeper made three top quality saves and was by far the busier of the two keepers in the opening 45 minutes.

Soon after the break San Sebastian who have only mustered up only four goals in their 12 away games found a golden opportunity when the Rojillos defence went momentarily to sleep and midfielder Joni slotted the ball inside the right hand post without been challenged inside the penalty box giving the visitors a 0-1 advantage.

The Rojillos then began to mount their challenge and after some good chances were finally handed their get out of jail card with a clear penalty for handball. Yeray stepped up to convert and extend his two year 100% record from the spot but the visiting keeper easily read his thoughts and saved with comfort.

The Rojillos fought on but could not capitalize on any of their 11 corners in the second period and countless opportunities from free kicks. In a higher level of football many of these dead ball situations would have been dealt with the severest of punishments.

Lanzarote´s equalizer came in the 83rd minute. From constant pressure the Madrid defence finally collapsed and after a small spout of head tennis Perreira finally nodded the ball home.

Midfielder Perreira levelling the scores seven minutes from time.
The home fans urged their team to go for the throat but for the remaining 10 minutes of play, they found themselves playing more with the heart rather than the brain and the result left both sides feeling disappointed.

Considering the financial problems with the club which has resulted in the players wages not been paid for over two months one can only admire the attitude of the players with 10 points out of 12 in their last four home games.

This character will certainly be put to the test in the next fortnight as Lanzarote travel to Celta Vigo B who have only been beaten once at home this season and the following week host the leagues second best traveling side Pontevedra.

                    CELTA VIGO B   1   LANZAROTE   1

24th February 2008

The Rojillos fought back from a goal down and grabbed a vital point away in Galicia in a thoroughly entertaining game of football.

The Celtics had much the better of the opening 45 minutes and went into the half time break winning 1-0.

The Rojillos manager Paco Gutiérrez made a brave but wise decision at the interval by replacing Nacho and Nene for local island boys Toñito and the up and coming Oscar. The second 45 minutes was Lanzarote´s finest away from home this season.

19 year old Oscar Martin terrorized the Celta Vigo defence and gave a new lease of life for the Rojillos. 10 minutes into the second half and a pass from left pack De La Plata to Fredrik who then placed the perfect cross for substitute Toñito who powered in a header from eight yards into the roof of the net.

The game opened up as both sides were looking to claim all three points. The Celta Vigo B side who have won their last 5 home games and only been beaten on their home turf once this season were rattled. The ball moved from one goal mouth to the other in seconds and both sides squandered great opportunities but as the whistle blew Lanzarote will be more pleased with the point.

It has now been over two months for any of the Lanzarote players to have received wages. These players only earn an average wage and many of them have families with mortgages and rely on their monthly cheque as do we all. Hopefully they will receive a month’s salary in the morning but for most of these players any thought of purchasing a new dvd player or a nice meal out with the Mrs will not happen as every last cent will have to be paid out on outstanding bills.

This makes this away point more special as it shows the players are committed to the cause. Next weeks home game against promotion chasing Pontevedra could put Lanzarote back on track for a top seven finish which would mean entrance into next years Copa Del Rey (F.A.Cup). Hopefully then our local government would realize the importance of being part of the worlds biggest entertainment; football, and pay their players who represent our beautiful island a fair and on time pay cheque.

U.D. Lanzarote slip one place down to 9th after a disappointing home defeat.

The team from Madrid started the better of the two teams and capitalized in the 19th minute with a goal from striker Victor from six yards. The Rojillos then began to play but still went into the half time interval losing by the narrowest of margins.

The Conejeros (locals) were fired up for the second half and within a minute were level. Nene hit a diagonal shot from 12 yards which fired in off the left hand post.

On the hour mark came the turning point when defender Javi Jimenez received his second yellow and the Rojillos were forced to play the remaining half hour with only 10 players. Pontevedra took full advantage and in the 77th minute deservedly regained the lead through substitute Igor.

The Rojillos had no option but to search for an equalizer and Lanzarotes front man Anibal blew an opportunity with seconds left on the clock narrowly heading wide. Deep into stoppage time with Lanzarote pressing for a goal Pontevedra broke and made the game safe with a strike from Guimerans who had come on as a sub a few minutes previous.

The Rojillos took a 12th minute lead from a trademark pinpoint corner by the Swede, Fredik and Anibal nodded in from the near post. Lanzarote were looking by far the superior team against a side propping up the league table.

The side from Tenerife who only last week had a sit down protest on the pitch prior to their home game versus Lugo over wages not being paid for months fought back and defender De La Plata gifted the away side with a blatant penalty which was duly converted leveling the game.

With over seven minutes of the first half remaining Nacho, Oscar and Anibal squandered good opportunities to put their team in front.

At the interval Rojillos manager Paco Gutierrez brought off  Nacho and the out of sorts Yeray and on came Brenes and Toñito. This proved to be a wise decision giving the Conejeros better width and faster passing.

The Tenerife side were not only running short of money but after chasing the game for long periods were also running out of breath. A crossfield pass from Fredrik was latched onto by local boy Oscar and he neatly dispatched a shot low into the left hand corner.

The Rojillos were never going to relinquish the lead a second time and in the 86th minute a fine bending free kick from Brenes guaranteed his side all three points keeping the Rojillos only goal difference away from a Copa Del Rey spot.

Union Deportiva Lanzarote were totally in control of the game in the first 55 minutes. A powerful shot from 12 yards by Fredrik which ricocheted off the underside of the bar gave the Rojillos the initiative. Only five minutes later Ex Lanzarote boy Checa leveled the scores albeit from major protests from the Lanzarote players as it certainly looked a handball rather than the chest and a good yard offside.

No doubt the Rojillos had been ruffled and only three minutes on and Santa Brigida took the lead and in the closing minutes a red card for Keeper Marino and another goal for the home team added to the misery.

23rd March 2008

In the 12 points to play for against the two teams from Fuerteventura Lanzarote have won none. Derby matches this season against our 7 mile away neighbours have all been lost by a solitary goal.

In a well contested game with good chances for both teams a draw always looked on the cards. Both sets of teams prior to the match were needing just one more win to secure football in this division next season and then push on for a top seven finish qualifying for the Copa Del Rey.

The game was heading for a scoreless draw until a mistake from Rojillos right back Angel let in Jandias front man Hector who slotted the ball home in the 74th minute. The Rojillos immediately threw on the vastly improving Toñito and five minutes later striker Nacho. The latter had a great opportunity in the closing minutes but was foiled by keeper Ramon.

The Copa Del Rey places are still up for grabs as Jandia was the only team to win who are competing for a place. Lanzarote face relegation threatened Fuenlabrada next week at home then in a space of three weeks the Rojillos will be playing the top three with the only home match against Real Madrids B side on the 13th April. Points for safety need to come next week.

30th March 2008

U.D. Lanzarote once again lose ground on their quest for a top seven finish to qualify for the Copa Del Rey in a poor display against relegation doomed Fuenlabrada.

In a game which failed to ignite Lanzarote have slipped one place to 12th though are still only three points away from playing Cup football next season.

Lanzarote shaded the first half with possession but failed to create any clear opportunities and with most of the opening 45 minutes being played in midfield it was no surprise that both sides enjoyed their half time cuppa with the game scoreless.

The match improved early in the second half but as often happens The Rojillos, whilst pressing their opposition were caught on the break and in the 65th minute front man Kikin put the Madrid side in front.

With 20 minutes remaining and after only 30 seconds from coming on as a sub, midfielder Brenes was brought down in the area and earnt his side a penalty. Anibal stepped up and converted his 7th goal of the campaign and set up a potential grandstand finish.

Good work from wingers Toñito and sub Oscar led to two very good penalty appeals turned down but in truth the Rojillos were the better side though a win would have been a generous result. Both teams were unhappy with the point as Fuenlabrada move to 7 point
s from safety and Lanzarote 7 points clear of relegation.

With the next 3 fixtures looking horrendous with first up an away game to 3rd placed Deportiva La Coruña B followed by a tasty home match to 2nd placed Real Madrids B side filled with the potential stars of the future and if that’s not enough the team that’s leading the pack is next on the list; Rayo Vallecano.

Madrids third biggest Club is a sleeping giant. Having competed in the UEFA cup only a few seasons ago Rayo will be set on 3 points with a view back to the big time, nevertheless Lanzarote have a decent record against the ex-Primera Liga club and only last season stole all 3 points on their turf.

What a result! Union Deportiva Lanzarote knowing that in a matter of three weeks they had to play the top three, Deportiva B away then home to Real Madrid B followed by a visit to Madrids 3rd most popular club and league leaders Rayo Vallecano was a little daunting to say the least.

Local lad Oscar Martin providing the amunition to his forwards in a priceless away victory.
Deportiva La Coruñas B side were full of optimism after being over one year unbeaten at home were rattled by a Lanzarote side short of 3 automatic starters Anibal, Nene and Perreira. Sometimes players need to be brought down to earth and Lanzarote possibly played their best game of the season without their three high profile players

The first half was played at an intense pace which resulted in little goal mouth opportunities for either side. This all changed early in the second half, the Rojillos began to play with a little more heart and with local star Oscar relishing his first team starts  Los Rojillos were threatening. A cross from Oscar in the 53rd minute was met by Victor Ramos and from 9 yards he headed a beauty leaving Coruñas keeper motionless.

Deportiva who have been in the top four all season applied the pressure and after only six minutes substitute Aridane levelled the scores. Los Rojillos withstood the immediate onslaught and after a dribbling run young Oscar Martin delivered an inch perfect pass for strike partner Nacho to toe home.

Lanzarote held firm and with veteran centre back Dani Mayo cleaning up the attacks and 35 year old Swedish international Fredrik having a calming influence controlling the midfield Lanzarote will fly back to the Island Monday not only with 3 points but also guaranteed Segunda B (league 1) football next season.

Manager Paco Gutierrez was asked after the game “Is your goal this season qualification for the Copa Del Rey”?  His answer was Why Not! Normally for the Cup you have to finish in the top seven though with Lanzarotes league, the B sides from Deportiva, Celta Vigo, Real
and Atletico Madrid will not be allowed entrance as their first team will be competing. This all becomes confusing but I will find out all the mathematical details in the coming weeks.

Lanzarotes next home game is against Real Madrid’s young up and coming stars. The Primera Ligas giants B side are favourites to regain promotion after relegation last season. This weekend they lost at home to Lugo 1-2 and there are not many players who have worn the white of Real to lose 2 consecutive games. Lanzarote love to upset the odds so if you are on the Island next Sunday 13th April come and see the Conejeros (locals) take on the future Galacticos (filthy rich footy players)
                             LANZAROTE   3   REAL MADRID B   1

13th April 2008

Unión Deportiva Lanzarotes search for a top 7 finish gathered momentum with a fine win over Real Madrid’s B side. My personal incentive to Rojillos (reds) manager Paco Gutierrez for his side to qualify for the cup with 6 bottles of Lanzarotes Bermejos wine must have paid huge dividends as the Conejeros (locals) have pulled off superb results in the last 2 games.
Most of this Real Madrid second eleven regularly train with Raul, Van Nistlerooy and the rest of the galacticos first eleven and are also in the chase for promotion. Lanzarote were not phased, and by the end of the 90 minutes the crowd were chanting Ole not for the white of Real Madrid but for the red and blue of Lanzarote.

The game couldn’t of began worse for the Conejeros as a mix up with defender Javi Jimenez and keeper Alberto led to a tap in for Real Madrid midfielder Parejo. From this moment the game was in full flight as the Rojillos rallied and came close with efforts from Victor Ramos and Anibal. Every counter attack from Real looked dangerous and with the leagues top scorer José Callejón proudly wearing the Real Madrid shirt his 20th strike of the season could have been only moments away.

The constant pressure soon paid dividends. On the half hour Swedish star Fredrik fired home from 8 yards following good work from Oscar to level the match. The Rojillos kept on pressing and late into stoppage time Fredrik returned the compliment to the newly founded local hero 19 year old Oscar Martin by laying on a gift for the youngster to slot home with an empty net gaping.

The crowd were jubilant during the break seeing very good football from a side capable of higher level football. Early in the second half Real began a 10 minute onslaught which was comfortably dealt with by Lanzarotes defence. Another local up and coming star Adrián did not put a foot wrong and installed confidence in a team short of their veteran centre back Dani Mayo through suspension.

On the hour mark Oscar Martin once again tantalized the Madrid defence with another sparkling run and finished a lovely solo effort hitting the ball low and hard into the bottom left hand corner.

What really impressed the fans was Lanzarotes attempt to completely kill off the game by searching for a fourth. As Real searched for anything the Rojillos kept themselves technically organized and limited their illustrious opponents with long distance efforts but themselves always looked threatening to inflict further pain to their opponents.

              The future is looking bright

20th April 2008

In the last 3 games the Rojillos have played the top 3 in the league and have taken 7 points out of a possible nine and this run of good form has put U.D. Lanzarotes cup destiny for next season in their own hands.

A superb point against a team that only 5 seasons ago were playing their football at Spain’s highest level and competing in the fourth round of the UEFA cup is a wonderful achievement for the island of Lanzarote.

The Rojillos traveled to Madrid without four of their stars, Fredrik, Anibal, Nene and Pereira. Rayo had been rampant winning all of their last 9 home games. Lanzarote controlled most of the possession in the first half and after only 4 minutes a corner from Koke was met by captain Juanma who narrowly headed wide. The league leaders were always going to be a threat and Lanzarotes keeper Alberto was kept alert and made good saves from forwards Pachón and twice from Piti.

In the 27th minute Brenes crossed in a free kick from the left flank and was once again met with the full force of Juanmas head only for keeper Tete to react brilliantly and tip over.

The first 20 minutes of the second half was contested mainly in the midfield with limited opportunities for either side. In the 64th minute Lanzarotes new wonder boy Oscar had a great chance to give his side the lead reacting to an indecisive goalkeeper and defence as he nipped in only to see his header rebound off the post. Lanzarote were looking threatening whilst defensively well organized and looked the more likely to claim all 3 points.

As the game entered the final 10 minutes the 4000 strong crowd began to get behind their team as Rayo were laying siege in their opponents half. In the 90th minute a great one handed save from Alberto denying the lively Piti was the best of their opportunities. The Rojillos withstood the 4 minutes of injury time and have returned home with a priceless point.

Lanzarote last 2 home games are against fellow teams who are fighting for that Copa Del Rey spot. First up is last years Segunda A (championship) side Vecindario followed by Lugo. Vecindario will be arriving here confident after pounding Lugo 6-0 today.

The stalemate was played with the heat being equivalent to a Swedish sauna. Temperatures topping 36 degrees with a Saharan hot dry wind blowing down the lungs of the 22 madmen kicking a ball about.

Praise must given to all players who performed with total commitment but in all truth I am sure both teams would have preferred to have a kick about down the beautiful beaches of Papagayo followed by a quick dip in the cool 20 degree ocean.
The Gran Canaria and last years Segunda A (championship) side had the better of the opening stages and only in the 5th minute rattled the woodwork followed seconds later by a header being finger tipped away by the athletic Rojillos keeper Marino. Lanzarote´s most clear cut opportunity was instant as a fine pass by most girl fans favourite player Victor Ramos sent   wonderboy Oscar Martin away with just the keeper to beat, unfortunately for the youngster he fluffed his shot well wide of the target.

After coping with the early pressure the Conejeros (locals) began to find their feet and were rewarded on the stroke of half time when another pin point freekick from Fredrik was powerfully headed home by the hard working Victor Ramos.

The lead lasted a full 7 minutes of the second half when centre backs Dani Mayo and Juanma failed to clear the danger and man of the match Raúl Borrero pounced and showed no mercy by rifling the ball low into the bottom right hand corner punishing the Rojillos to the maximum.

As the game entered the final stages Lanzarote brought on last years talented winger Yeray but all he won was a yellow card for himself in a poor mini performance.

As the ref blew for full time it seemed a race at the exit as the majority of fans had only one thought in mind; Destination beach!

Lanzarote head to Galicia in the top north of Spain bordering Portugal next Sunday. The team they face Ourense occupies the last automatic relegation position and will be battling for survival. This is a must win for Lanzarote if their dreams of Copa Del Rey for next season are to be fulfilled.

A defeat to a team fighting for their lives in the drop zone could have cost Lanzarote their chance of qualifying for Spain’s second most prestigious trophy, the Copa Del Rey.
Once again the Rojillos were winning the game possession wise but as Barcelona found to their cost midweek against Manchester United that keeping the ball wins nothing unless the ball crosses the line between the sticks.

The home team from the top north of Spain came out fighting and for the opening 10 minutes the islanders were on the defence. Lanzarote had the best opportunity of the first half in the 13th minute when Nacho found his effort rebound off the post.

Ourense were beginning to look nervous as their fans became impatient knowing that their team has not played in the third division for 13 years. As the sides headed into the break it looked as it could be unlucky 13 as they only had two and a half games remaining and were three points from safety with an inferior goal difference.

As expected the home side were once again fired up for the second half and after one good missed chance took the lead in the 65th minute when midfielder Antxo latched onto a deep cross from the right flank and nodded in from the far post.

Lanzarote had great opportunities to level the scores but missed chances from Brenes and a last minute one on one with the keeper from Toñito that failed to hit the target will make it extremely difficult for the people of Lanzarote to see Primera Liga clubs fighting it out in the cup next season.

The Rojillos will have to win the last two games against Lugo this Sunday followed a week later by an extremely difficult away game against promotion chasing Universidad to stand any chance of revisiting that cup dream.

Unión Deportiva Lanzarote were defeated in their last home game of the season by a side who have now won six of their last seven games and this has pushed the team from Galicia into the last play off position to compete for Segunda A (championship) football.

Lugo opened the scoring in the 8th minute from left midfielder Dani Carril. The Rojillos defenders seemed to be static as he waltzed around them and planted the ball home. This was to be the only opportunity of the first half for the visitors as Lanzarote went in search of an equalizer and totally dominated the remainder of the first half. In the 32nd minute a fair challenge from Fredrik on Lugos keeper fell in to the path of Victor Ramos who scored from close range.

Lanzarote had their tails up in the second period and were looking for a winner to thank the home crowd for their loyal support. In the 69th minute with Lanzarote on the attack the ball broke for Lugo and as the ball was pulled back from the left wing striker Ruben fired in a rocket of a shot into the bottom right hand corner leaving keeper Marino no chance.

The Lugo defence held firm till the final whistle and a win next week will see them competing for Segunda A football via the play offs.

After a good performance the crowd gave the U.D.Lanzarote team a standing ovation. The Rojillos may not have made the play offs or clinched a Copa Del Rey spot but as most the supporters know a team that has not been paid in three months and severely let down by their own local government deserved nothing less than the applause received by the home fans.

The team cannot see this as a successful season but after a season long relegation fight last year most fans are content that U.D. Lanzarote will be representing the island in Segunda B (league 1) football in Arrecife come August.

As the players had not been paid for four months and with no chance of Lanzarote being promoted, relegated or qualifying for the Copa Del Rey the outcome of this match was inevitable.

The Gran Canaria side had to win and rely on two other results going their way in order to make the play offs.

Rojillos (reds) manager Paco Gutiérrez had decided to give some of his fringe players a run and it was deep into first half stoppage time when one of these players, Rodolfo slided in for a tackle on the edge of the box and made no contact with the ball but to be fair no contact with opponent either and the referee awarded a spot kick. Angel Sanchez stepped up and comfortably converted.

Five minutes after the restart and it was game over for the Rojillos as Cacá delightfully chipped keeper Marino though only nodded the ball up in the air giving Lanzarote defenders plenty of time to make a complete mess of the situation and midfielder Pollo punished the Rojillos to the maximum from close range.

A 2-0 home win for Universidad was not enough as they finished the season in 6th place, only one point from the play offs. Lanzarote ended the season in a disappointing 13th position, however with the financial problems the club has incurred this will be seen in the eyes of the locals as mission accomplished.
